Golfers Voice Concern Over Woods' Masters Absence
Tiger Woods is absent from the 2024 Masters Tournament following a DUI arrest in Florida on March 27. The five-time champion's situation drew reactions from fellow players preparing for the event at Augusta National. Jason Day called it unfortunate while emphasizing Woods' humanity.
Woods faced charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test after a rollover crash in Jupiter Island. Bodycam footage captured him stating he was hoping to play in the Masters. He later released a statement announcing he would step away from golf to seek treatment, pleading not guilty and demanding a jury trial.
Day, who grew up idolizing Woods, described the arrest as selfish for endangering others but expressed hope for his recovery. Patrick Reed, a past Masters winner, said the absence of Woods and fellow LIV Golf player Phil Mickelson, who withdrew for a family health matter, hurts the sport. Bubba Watson focused on Woods as a person, stating he has supported him since around 2006 or 2007 regardless of golf performance.
This marks Woods' second DUI arrest in the past decade, following a 2017 incident in Jupiter Island involving prescription medications. Players continue preparations at Augusta National, one of golf's toughest venues, amid the major's early rounds.
