American-born freestyle skier Eileen Gu switched allegiance to China in 2019, weeks after her first World Cup appearance for the United States, sparking ongoing debate about national representation in sports.[1][2]

Born in San Francisco to a Chinese immigrant mother who studied at Peking University and earned a master's at Stanford, Gu won gold in women's freeski big air on February 8 and silver in halfpipe on February 17 at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.[2][3][4]

Gu announced her decision on Instagram on May 30, 2019, citing a desire to inspire young people in China and promote cross-nation understanding.[1][2]

China ramped up recruitment of overseas-born athletes with Chinese heritage from around 2018, targeting events like the Beijing Olympics to bolster medal counts.[5]

U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu, born in Richmond, California, to parents of Chinese descent, was among the athletes approached but remained with Team USA.[5][6]

Liu's father, Arthur Liu, fled China after taking part in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.[6][5]

Ahead of the Beijing 2022 Games, the Liu family alleged they were targeted by Chinese intelligence operatives attempting recruitment, an experience Alysa Liu described in October 2023 as "a little bit freaky and exciting."[6]

Liu competed for the United States at Beijing 2022, contributing to the figure skating team's bronze medal.[7]

In a February 2022 interview, Gu addressed geopolitical questions, stating she required extensive evidence before forming opinions on sensitive issues like reports of persecution in Xinjiang.[8]
