Fisher Cats score 10 runs on one hit in second inning

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate, scored 10 runs in the second inning on a single hit and no Portland errors during Tuesday's 12-7 Eastern League victory over the Portland Sea Dogs. The outburst erased an early 2-0 deficit against the Boston Red Sox affiliate. Nine of those runs came with two outs, fueled by eight walks, two hit batters and four wild pitches from Portland pitchers.

Portland starter Hayden Mullins walked the first two batters of the inning and uncorked a wild pitch after striking out the side in the first. A sacrifice fly followed before Mullins recorded two outs, then walked three straight to tie the score. Reliever Jorge Juan hit the next batter with the bases loaded, issued another wild pitch and walked two more before Cade Feeney entered and allowed a wild pitch and Ismael Munguia's two-run single, the inning's only hit.

The performance occurred in frigid conditions at Hadlock Field, where ground crew cleared snow from the field and infield before first pitch with temperatures a few degrees above freezing. Sea Dogs president Geoff Iacuessa described the inning to WGME Channel 13 as unprecedented in his experience. No major league team has scored more than four runs in an inning without a hit until that hit, according to the Elias Sports Bureau; MLB.com notes pitchers have allowed five runs without a hit in 1⅔ innings or fewer on 16 occasions.

Munguia, who represented Nicaragua in last month's World Baseball Classic, capped the rally. The teams opened a six-game series.
