Kaillie Humphries, a U.S. Olympic bobsled champion and California resident, expressed opposition to a lawsuit filed by the California State University (CSU) system and San Jose State University (SJSU) against the U.S. Department of Education.[1] Humphries, who pays taxes in California, told Fox News Digital: "I love California. I don't agree with its politics. I don't agree with the lawsuit at all."[1]
The lawsuit, filed on December 20, 2024, in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, challenges a Title IX investigation by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights into SJSU's women's volleyball program.[2][3] The probe, launched on April 17, 2024, examines potential violations related to the participation of transgender athlete Blaire Fleming.[4]
Humphries voiced support for Brooke Slusser, a former SJSU volleyball co-captain who played alongside Fleming and shared locker rooms, hotel rooms and an apartment without knowing the athlete's biological male status.[1][5] Slusser filed a lawsuit in November 2024 against the NCAA, Mountain West Conference, CSU and coach Todd Kress, seeking damages for alleged Title IX violations.[5]
"I support her," Humphries said. "I would say she did the right thing, and she has a community of people who believe in what she's fighting for."[1] Humphries called online attacks against Slusser "atrocious" and stressed that sport must remain a safe environment.[1]
Humphries cited concerns for physical safety, mental health and privacy in women's sports, stating: "I don't see a world where there should be any male in a female sport at all."[1] As a mother to a toddler son, she raised worries about future schooling in California.[1]
Humphries switched from Canada to the U.S. team in 2019 after alleging physical and mental abuse by her Canadian coach, Todd Ludwick, and lack of support from Bobsled Canada Skeleton.[6][7] She became a U.S. citizen in December 2021.[8] Humphries holds three Olympic gold medals—in the women's two-man event at Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, and monobob at Beijing 2022—along with one silver, making her the most decorated female bobsleigh pilot in Olympic history.[8][9]
