Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains with the team after completing his fifth NFL season in 2024, during which the Dolphins finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs.[1][2] Tagovailoa, 27, is signed to a four-year contract extension worth $212.4 million that runs through the 2028 season.[3][4]

The Dolphins selected Tagovailoa fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama.[3][5] In 64 regular-season games over five seasons (57 starts), he has completed 1,569 of 2,368 passes for 15,151 yards, 92 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.[1] He has rushed for 699 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Tagovailoa appeared in the playoffs twice with Miami—in 2022 (9-8 record, wild-card win over Buffalo, divisional loss to Kansas City) and 2023 (11-6 record, wild-card loss to Kansas City).[1][2] He has played a full 17-game slate just once, in 2023 when he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards.[1]

Injuries limited Tagovailoa in multiple seasons, including a fractured hip in 2022 and a thumb injury in 2024 that sidelined him for six weeks.[1][6] He started 11 games in 2024, passing for 2,491 yards, 14 touchdowns and 6 interceptions as Miami ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring offense (18.4 points per game).[2]

The Dolphins open the 2025 league year on March 12, with free agency negotiations permitted from March 10. General manager Chris Grier and coach Mike McDaniel face roster decisions amid salary cap constraints, but no changes at quarterback have been announced.[4][7]
