American mixed martial artist Jon Jones retained his UFC heavyweight championship with a third-round technical knockout victory over fellow American Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 on November 16, 2024, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.[1][2]
The win came at 2:47 of round three via ground-and-pound stoppage by referee Marc Goddard, marking Jones' first successful defense of the heavyweight title he won earlier in 2023 against Ciryl Gane.[1][3]
Jones, competing out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, improved to a professional record of 28-1 with one no contest (NC). He vacated the light heavyweight title in 2020 after three successful defenses as champion and previously held the belt on two occasions.[2][4]
Miocic, a former heavyweight champion from Cleveland, Ohio, suffered his fourth loss in five fights, dropping to 20-5.[1][3]
The main event headlined UFC 309, part of the promotion's annual pay-per-view series held during UFC's traditional November slot in New York.[1][2]
