ESPN's Dick Vitale criticizes Kentucky Wildcats roster spending amid loss to Florida Gators

The Kentucky Wildcats lost 84-77 to the No. 5-ranked Florida Gators on March 7, 2026, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, dropping their record to 19-12 overall and 10-8 in Southeastern Conference play.[1][2]

After Florida extended a first-half lead to 26-19 via free throws, Vitale said: "I’ve done several Kentucky games, win or lose, $22 million this team [which has been reported] in terms of the NIL for their players. I think in $22 million, they could have put together a better roster than they did. I really do."[3]
Near the end of the game, Vitale dismissed notions of moral victories, stating: "You’re Kentucky. You’re Kentucky. And you’ve got to leave here with a win, especially at home. There are no moral victories. Come on. I don’t want to hear that."[3]
The Wildcats, seeded No. 9 in the SEC Tournament, are scheduled to face No. 16 seed LSU on Wednesday, with implications for NCAA Tournament seeding ahead of Selection Sunday.[1][2]
Kentucky has been coached by Mark Pope since April 2024, when he replaced John Calipari, who departed for Arkansas following a second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Houston in 2024.[5][6]
