Detroit Tigers' Tarik Skubal Returns to Spring Training After One Start With Team USA at 2026 World Baseball Classic

Tarik Skubal, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and the 2024 American League Cy Young Award winner, made one start for Team USA during Pool B of the 2026 World Baseball Classic before returning to his club's spring training camp as originally scheduled.[1][2]
Pool B is hosted at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, from March 6 to 11, 2026, and features the United States, Mexico, Italy and Great Britain.[3]
Skubal's early departure received support from Team USA teammates but prompted criticism from some fans on social media.
The United States team, considered a favorite to advance from the group, suffered an 8-6 loss to Italy that left its progression to the quarterfinals uncertain.
Advancement from Pool B requires the top two teams based on win-loss record, head-to-head results and run differential where applicable.
Skubal, who will become a free agent after the 2026 Major League Baseball season, prioritized preparation for the Tigers' campaign.[4]
Quarterfinals are scheduled for Miami and Tokyo, with semifinals and the championship at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles from March 17 to 22, 2026.[3]
