Cincinnati Reds right-handed starting pitcher Hunter Greene will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday to remove bone chips and loose bodies, the team announced on Tuesday. The procedure could sideline the 26-year-old for up to four months.[1][2]

Greene, who experienced right elbow stiffness during a spring training game last week, underwent an MRI that confirmed the issue.[1][2]

In a statement posted to his Instagram Stories, Greene explained that discomfort began toward the end of the 2025 season. He continued pitching to help the Reds' postseason push, received an offseason MRI showing bone fragments, but symptoms returned during preparations for spring training.[3][1]

Greene said the irritation prevented him from executing pitches effectively, prompting the decision for surgery now to ensure readiness for the 2026 season.[3]

Born August 1, 1999, in Dayton, Ohio, Greene was selected by the Reds with the second overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Notre Dame High School.[4][5]

He debuted with Cincinnati in July 2022 and has established himself as one of baseball's hardest throwers, with a fastest recorded pitch velocity of 105.2 mph.[4][6]

The Reds play their home games at Great American Ball Park, a 42,319-capacity stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, which opened in 2003.[7][8]

The 2026 MLB regular season is set to begin on March 27.[9]
