The Cleveland Browns restructured quarterback Deshaun Watson's contract ahead of the 2024 NFL free agency period, converting $44.745 million of his $46 million 2024 base salary into a signing bonus.[1][2] The move lowers Watson's base salary to the $1.255 million veteran minimum and frees up approximately $36 million in cap space as his original 2024 cap hit exceeded $72 million.[1][2]

The Browns also restructured cornerback Denzel Ward's contract, converting $15.465 million of his base salary into a bonus.[1][3] These adjustments follow previous restructurings of Watson's deal during the 2023 offseason.[2]

Watson is in year three of a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract extension he signed with Cleveland shortly after his trade acquisition.[2][4] The deal, one of the richest in NFL history at signing, runs through the 2026 season.[2][4]

The Browns acquired Watson from the Houston Texans on March 18, 2022, in exchange for three first-round draft picks.[5][6] In December 2023, co-owner Jimmy Haslam described the move as falling short of expectations, stating, "I thought it would be more of a home run than it’s been."[7]

Watson has appeared in 20 games with the Browns through seven starts in the 2024 season, completing 366 of 607 passes (60.3 percent) for 3,916 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.[8][9] His time has been limited by an 11-game suspension in 2022 for violating the NFL personal conduct policy, plus injuries including a fractured right humerus, fractured right ankle and a torn right Achilles tendon.[8][9]

Legal tampering for free agency began March 11, 2024, with players permitted to sign new deals starting at 4 p.m. ET on March 13.[10][11]
