Bill Belichick, architect of eight Super Bowl victories during a 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots and earlier with the New York Giants, was appointed head football coach at the University of North Carolina on December 12, 2024.[1][2] The 72-year-old Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots after the 2023 NFL season, will oversee all aspects of the program at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) school.[1]

Belichick won six Super Bowl rings as Patriots head coach (2001-2023), posting a regular-season record of 266-121 and a playoff mark of 31-12, and two more as Giants defensive coordinator in Super Bowls XXI and XXV.[2][3] The hire follows the dismissal of Mack Brown on November 26, 2024, after North Carolina finished the 2024 season with a 2-10 record.[1][4]

Belichick is expected to assemble a staff including longtime associate Michael Lombardi, a former NFL executive, in a senior football operations role, and possibly Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator.[2][5] The Tar Heels play home games at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which has a capacity of 50,883.[1][4]

The announcement came amid media attention on Belichick's personal life, particularly his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson. During a CBS Sunday Morning interview on December 8, 2024, promoting his forthcoming book The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football, Hudson intervened when the reporter raised the couple's age difference.[5][6]

Belichick has downplayed external noise in past comments, stating after his Patriots exit that he remains focused on football. North Carolina opens spring practice on March 24, 2026.[1]
