Hall of Famer Troy Aikman attributes NFL early-season injuries to lighter training camp practices

Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback from 1989 to 2000 and three-time Super Bowl champion (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX), expressed his view on a perceived increase in early-season NFL injuries during the October 11, 2024, episode of the "Rodeo Time Podcast."[1][2][3]
Aikman suggested that NFL rules designed to enhance player safety, including limits on padded practices during training camp, may paradoxically contribute to soft tissue injuries and muscle pulls at the season's start.[1][4]
Recalling two-a-day practices at the Cowboys' training camp in Wichita Falls, Texas, during the 1980s and 1990s, Aikman contrasted them with current protocols. "I think they only wear pads one day a week or one time a day, and they have a walk-through, and then after, I don’t know how it all reads, but it’s pretty player friendly and favorable," he said.[1]
Aikman linked these changes to collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations, noting that players receive concessions on practice duration and frequency in exchange for financial terms favoring owners. He argued that reduced football-specific training prevents players from adequately "callous[ing] their bodies," despite individual offseason workouts.[1][4]
Notable recent examples include Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who underwent knee surgery after a preseason injury on August 10, 2024, and missed the entire regular season.[5][6]
Aikman emphasized his support for player safety initiatives but cautioned that some measures might have unintended consequences.[1]
The remarks come amid ongoing NFL player safety discussions, including commissioner Roger Goodell's comments on potentially adding a Wednesday game before Thanksgiving and future CBA talks that could address an 18-game schedule.[1][7]
